This book was great preparation for our family traveling to Nashville to see the solar eclipse August 21. Written for middle school age readers or older, Jordan's adventure seeing the eclipse uses delightful graphics for her characters and illustrations of basic astronomy needed to appreciate and understand this amazing upcoming event. Cara also cleverly shares how other cultures built myths around eclipses through the ages to explain them. She also shows where the eclipse can be viewed and safely. After reading this book, you will not want to miss the eclipse, an experience of a lifetime.
In 1979, ABC New's Frank Reynolds described his hope for the total eclipse of 21 Aug 2017 with this wonderful quote. Now here we are 38 years later about to see that very eclipse, and here's a story about how Frank wanted us to view it!
This is an authentically narrated short story (aimed at school-aged kids) about a teenager who travels to see a solar eclipse, and meets a cross-section of interesting people at the event. It cleverly introduces a couple of activities designed to explain some of the science behind a solar eclipse, and it introduces other mysteries, leaving them up to the reader to address, such as "Does Jordan ever eat lunch that day?". It's beautifully illustrated, and also beautifully ties together a diverse group of people who share a wonderful science-driven experience together. Here's hoping that the school-aged readers get out to see this wonderful event on Monday, 21 August 2017... and that the tens of millions of eclipse viewers in the US have experiences that are as enjoyable as Jordan's. "Science awaits!"
